Dental Implant Success Rate
As advances in dental implant surgery have improved so has the success rates. Dental implants have been around for more than 30 years now and the success rates reflect this - up to 98%.
Some of the factors that affect the succes rate are
Excessive Smoking and Drinking - this can in many case have a large influence on the success rate. It is estimated that excessive smoking and drinking can decrease the success rate by as much as 20%.
Oral Health - the presence of peridontal gum desease means that there is an increased amount of bacteria living around the teeth which can often affect the dental implant success rate. Gum desease should be treated as much as possible before having implants placed.
Dental Hygene - it is essential that good oral hygene is carried out after implants are placed. Often, especially where implants are used to replace the rear teeth it will become necessary to use a specail flossing brush to clean around the just exposed implant under the crowns. Failing to follow good dental hygene severely affects dental implant success rates and allows the same process that effects normal teeth to take hold.
If you are worried about your implants then make sure that the implants you select carry at least a 10 year guarantee though if failure to follow good dental hygene can be proved the guarantee will be null and void.
